Archaeological Society / Harry Walts Memorial Graduate
Scholarship
The Loveland Archaeological Society / Harry Walts Memorial Graduate Scholarship is awarded each year by the Loveland Archaeological Society, Inc (LAS). Applications are accepted each year from March 1 through April 30. The recipient will be selected and notified by June 30. The scholarship will be awarded in September during the Loveland Stone Age Fair (SAF) at the beginning of the SAF program. The SAF is held in Loveland, Colorado, each year on the last full weekend in September. The scholarship funds will be paid to the recipient.
The scholarship will be administered by the LAS with assistance from the University of Wyoming, George C. Frison Institute. Application packages are available from the department secretary in the Anthropology Main Office (Room 123, Anthropology Building). Completed applications must be returned to the department secretary by April 30.
The late Harry Walts was a long-time member of LAS and a long-time collector of Indian artifacts. He always had a desire to support archaeology through research and education. Memorial contributions in Harry’s honor formed the basis for this scholarship.

Eligible recipients: Preference given for Colorado or Wyoming studies. Also considered would be focus in western high plains, foothills, & mountains, Great Basin, or Colorado Plateau.
Amount of scholarship: $500
Administration of scholarship: Loveland Archaeological Society (LAS), with assistance from the University of Wyoming, George Frison Institute

Who
may apply:
1. A graduate student in Anthropology at the University of Wyoming with an emphasis toward archaeology.
2. The student is expected to make Archaeology a vocation and to contribute constructively to its field.
3. The applicant must have maintained a 3.0 GPA in all courses.

The scholarship will be
awarded at the beginning of the Stone Age Fair program.
Criteria
used to judge the applicant:
The judges shall disregard
race, sex, age, color of skin, and any other factor that may constitute
discrimination.
A factor in choosing the
recipient will be an emphasis on Colorado or Wyoming for areas of study,
both for thesis and career goals.
Cooperative attitude toward
responsible amateurs.
Letters of recommendation.
By virtue of accepting the
scholarship, the applicant agrees to present a Stone Age Fair program either
on their thesis or current area of research.
The program or presentation may be as short as 20 minutes.
The panel of judges for the
scholarship shall consist of selected LAS members and one faculty member
from U of W Anthropology Department.

In addition, the
recipient of the LAS / Harry Walts Memorial Graduate Scholarship agrees to
present a program at the Stone Age Fair within two years of completing graduate
studies.
What should be included in the application:
The application shall include the following:
1. Application form, filled out completely.
2. A short vita.
3. Two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a professional Anthropologist/Archaeologist.
4. Verification of GPA signed by Anthropology Department Secretary.
Submission of Application:
Submit the application to the Department Secretary in the Anthropology Main Office, University of Wyoming.
Administration of scholarship:
Loveland Archaeological Society, with assistance from the University of Wyoming, George Frison Institute, will be responsible for the administration of the scholarship.
